A stagecoach carrying a box labeled "US Dept. Of Health" rolls across the prairie. Inside are Jim and another man. The man attacks Jim and Jim throws him out of the stage. Silas Crotty shoots the driver. Jim stops the train and gets shot. The gang takes the stage and leaves Jim lying unconscious on the ground. Back at the train, Artie and Col. Petrie are worried. That box contains the entire supply of small pox vaccine for the West. Neither it nor Jim have shown up. A note, mailed before Jim left said if they want to get the vaccine back, to go see prisoner #124AJ. A small box is thrown though the window. Inside is an empty vial. The telegraph reveals that #124AJ is Furman Crotty. Artie goes to Levenworth to see him. He says that his price for the vaccine is his freedom and a full pardon.
A miner finds Jim and takes his hat, shirt, vest, jacket and gun belt. Artie agrees to arrange Crotty's release. Jim stumbles into a town and sees a man harassing a woman, Cloris. He convinces the man to leave. He wakes up in Cloris' bed and asks her what his name is. Crotty leaves prison and is followed by "Dr. Zorbis." Some of Crotty's men notice Jim talking to Cloris in the saloon. They realize he's alive and try to correct their mistake. Jim whups them for a bit then sneaks out with Cloris. Dr. Zorbis rides right past them. Crotty rides up and goes into a bathhouse. Cloris offers to spy on the gang to try to find out who Jim is. Silas and Rusty have set up a banquet for Crotty in a theater. Crotty arrives and discovers a trap set up under the cover of one of the dishes. He shoots Silas. One of his men tells him that Jim isn't dead.
Cloris returns to her room and tells Jim his last name is West. Jim asks her to arrange a meeting between him and the gang. Artie stops at a Baptist church and learns that Crotty wants one million dollars in gold for the vaccine. The gang agrees to the meeting -- on their terms. Artie notices Jim's gun belt in a pawn shop. He asks the owner, who tells him about the miner. Cloris leads Jim into a trap. Artie retrieves Jim's clothes from the miner. Rusty decides on a showdown and gives Jim a gun belt. Jim shoots a least three of the gang. Rusty grabs Cloris and goes into the theatre. Jim follows. A boy watches the whole thing and tells some of the townspeople. Artie overhears and heads after Jim. Jim wings Rusty. Artie enters and Jim shoots at him. Some of the gang sneaks behind Artie, triggering Jim's memory, and Jim tells Artie to duck.
Crotty has Jim, Artie and Cloris tied up. He tells them that the US government has trades the million for well-water. Crotty leave. Jim and Artie cut themselves loose and notice their on a wagon scale. Artie figures that the scale is wire so that if the load is lightened, it would set off explosives. Cloris lies down like she's sick. Jim and Artie start pulling barrels onto the scale. As they get the last barrel on the scale, the plug is knocked out of one of them. Wine starts pouring out. Jim, Artie and Cloris get out just before the barn explodes. Artie notices that Cloris has small pox and takes her to the hospital. Jim goes to the theatre and jumps Crotty and his gang. Artie arrives and helps Jim capture Crotty. Back in the train, Artie has promised Cloris and a friend a night of dinner and dancing. A message on the telegraph tells them to attend one of the Senator's wife's musicals. Jim suddenly comes down with a relapse of amnesia and Artie prescribes dinner and dancing.
