Jim rides into Denver to an annual convention of judges. He meets Judge M'Guigan playing billiards with another judge. They step outside to discuss the theft of a crate of dynamite, when the other judge blows himself up. The Chief of Police has his bobbies search the wreckage for clues. Jim finds a bomb fragment, which he tosses to the Chief and his bobbies, who promptly scatter. Grinning, Jim picks the fragment off the floor where the Chief had dropped it, and leaves. Jim interrupts a discussion of cooking techniques and talk about the bomb and Zeno Baroda, who is the only one, besides Artie (of course), who could build one like this. Coincidentally, Baroda has recently been released by Judge M'Guigan. Jim asks M'Guigan about Baroda, when they notice a clock on the mantle that wasn't' there before. The Chief and his bobbies arrive just in time for Jim to throw the clock at them. Well, ok, into a bucket of water. Jim goes into the town to ask around and finds Baroda, who throws him out.
Judge M'Guigan asks Artie to make a cake with the Statue of Liberty on top. While they're talking, a couple of waiters drop a case of champagne. Artie and the Judge open it and find dynamite. Artie watches the dance rehearsal and has gotten involved in another discussion of cooking techniques when he notices Baroda going up the hotel stairs. Artie follows him and raps on Judge M'Guigan's door. Baroda knocks Artie out and shoots through the door, which Artie has so conveniently pointed out for him. Baroda winds up a toy bear, lets it loose and leaves. Artie wakes up to find the bear walking under his nose. He grabs the bear and throws it out the window, where it blows up. M'Guigan open the door on the other side of the hall and decides that he doesn't want to stay at the hotel. He first tries the train, only the whole hotel knows he's staying there. So Vashti hides him. Vashti tells Jim that Artie has been hurt and is asking for him. Jim goes to him, finds a trip-wire, cuts it and traces it to the cold storage room. Jim is shoved into the room and the door is locked behind him. The fake Artie reveals himself to be Judge M'Guigan, who switches the torch on Lady Liberty with one with dynamite in it. Jim finds Artie ties up in the storage room. After the dinner, M'Guigan makes his speech and Vashti does her dance and lights the torch. Jim and Artie blast their way out of the storage room. After a chase, Vashti and M'Guigan are captured.
