Writer's Guidelines

(January 1997)

  • No fiction.
  • The topic must be mystery related.
  • While we don't use fiction, the article can be about fiction.
  • We don't use photographs at this time, but line art related to the article can be used if it is copyright free or created specifically to be used with the article.
  • Typical length would be 800 to 1,000 words.
  • Submissions should be on diskette accompanied by a printed version. Mac, Word preferred. DOS or Windows diskettes are acceptable with text in Word, or in ASCII. Please convert WordPerfect to ASCII text. We usually don't return diskettes or manuscripts. We will take online submissions, but query first.
  • We do accept reprints if it fits our needs.
  • We pay $5 for first serial rights. If we use it online at the Mystery Connection website, The Magnifying Glass newsletter or include it in The Magnifying Glass Almanac book, we pay $5 each.
  • At this time, we are looking for short, Fodor travel-like articles about mystery or true crime related tours or landmarks anywhere in the world.

Complete information about times, address, telephone numbers, how to get there, what it costs, and why a mystery fan would find it appealing should be central to the piece.

We have a format we use that organizes the information.

Articles already in the works are:
  • Grave Line Tour of Beverly Hills
    St. Paul Gangster Tour
    SF Walking Tour

Please don't plan any trips with the expectation of expense reimbursement without first negotiating with us.
